Team India captain Virat Kohli revealed that India did think about going for a victory at tea time on day five of the fifth and final Test at The Oval on Tuesday.
India, who were down and out at the end of day four, were steadied by overnight batsmen KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane, who put on a 118-run stand for the fourth wicket before Rahane fell to a loose shot to Moeen Ali.
India lost debutant Hanuma Vihari soon after and were staring down the barrel but then came the comeback. Rishabh Pant joined Rahul, who was looking increasingly confident at the crease with his stroke play.
The pair batted out the entire lunch session with a run-rate of above four mostly and looked to take on the bowlers after tea. But their 204-run stand came to an end when Adil Rashid bowled a magical delivery to knock Rahul's stumps over and send him packing for a well-made 149. Pant, who also played a sensational knock to bring up his maiden Test century, hung in there but ultimately threw his wicket away after a very sensible innings.
